Cappadocia is one of the most popular and famous historical places in Turkey, which is shrouded in a huge number of secrets, mysteries and impressions. It is difficult to list the attractions of Cappadocia, since every centimeter of land here, in the east of Asia Minor, is unique and inimitable in its own way. Our blog will tell you about the most remarkable places in this region that everyone should definitely visit.
Museum “open air” Goreme occupies a huge part of the territory of Cappadocia, and its age goes back thousands of years. Previously, this area was completely strewn with ash and lava from an erupting volcano, which over many years formed bizarre tuff pillars, mushrooms and numerous figures here. Inside the rocks there are still huge cities in which the first Christians hid from persecution. There are also ancient temples with ancient frescoes (the Churches of St. Barbara and St. Basil, the Snake Church, etc.), picturesque valleys and panoramic areas.
The underground city of Kaymakli is an impressive settlement created inside a rock. Its floors go 20 m deep, and the living quarters are located in several tiers. The size of this territory is truly amazing, because here, at the same time, almost 15 thousand Christians could take refuge from persecution. Among the popular underground cities in Cappadocia, Derinkuyu, or the “deep well,” is also highlighted. Its depth is more than 50 m, and in some places the mines reach a height of 9 km.
Several million tourists come to see the balloon festival every year. This parade is held daily at dawn, around 5 am and lasts about 1 hour. At this time, hundreds of bright hot air balloons soar into the sky, from the baskets of which truly fabulous views of the unearthly alien landscape of Cappadocia open from a height of 500 m above the ground.
